1. Give each child a piece of card stock. The students may choose their color or you, as the teacher, you may decide if the students use a specific color.
2. Students may create the shape of their name tag but adhere to specific dimensions. For example, all name tags must have a height of four inches and a length of 8 inches. Or you may choose minimum and maximum dimensions to allow the students to have more flexibility in the design of the name tag.
3. Students write their first names and first initial of their last name if there is more than 1 student with the same name. Ask students to write their names to be visible across the room. Students can work in pairs.
4. Allow students to use crayons, markers, pencil crayons but model your own name tag to illustrate how bold colors are more visible.
5. Let students decorate the name tag but ensure the name is the most important information on the name tag.
6. Have students present the name tags to the class from their seats and have students sitting the furthest away from them read the name.
7. Laminate if possible and tape to the top of the desk.
Name tags are important for teachers, students, and visitors to the class. When a principal walks into the classroom it is advantageous for them to call a student by their name and not by what they are wearing. Substitute teachers, French teachers and other part time teachers and teacher assistants have many students to remember and name tags are a great tool for the teacher to get to know the students.
