Teachers Coaching Sports

Should teachers invest the time and money in taking a coaching course?

As I was perusing the community recreational guide for my sons, I ran across an ad to take an introductory coaching class. I thought what a great idea, it is only for 2 days and cost just over a hundred dollars. I have the skills to motivate and inspire the students in the classroom but often in the gymnasium I am a little out of my element. The introductory class will not make me the next Bobby Knight but it will give me the tools of what to expect and what not to expect from my players.

I have never played sports competitively but as soon as I am having a game of 21 with my husband or 14 year old nephew, my competitiveness comes out and I forget about the joy and my only purpose is to win. I think often as coaches, it begins as fun but a big part of you wants to win. An introductory coaching program will teach you how to balance fun with winning.
