Students Discovering Volcanoes

Students are bored with the traditional homework and many students rush the work. Intrigue your students with homework that allows them to discover.

This weekend, my sons and nephews spent part of the afternoon creating a snow volcano. After their creation they asked for some supplies to make the explosion substance. The boys experimented with baking soda and vinegar, as well with diet coke and mentos. The boys used food colouring and experimented with the quantities of vinegar to baking soda. What was wonderful to see, was their involvement in the experiment process. As they were creating they were learning about volcanoes, formulas, problem solving, and cooperation.

Give weekend homework that excites the students and makes them want to participate. Too often students are doing busy work at home and spend limited time exploring concepts. By exploration students will learn by trial and error and at school the students can discuss their assignments. During the discussion, the teacher is able to reinforce information that is key for the students to learn and understand.
