Strategies to create a learning environment for students to complete their homework.

October is the month that students are fully integrated into school. Teachers are sending home more homework to ensure all curriculum is taught for the year. However, parents are frustrated trying to find the time for their kids to finish homework, have family time, and participate in extracurricular activities.

There is no one solution, as each individual student is different and will require their own unique homework help strategies. First strategy for all students is to create a learning environment in the home that is conducive to learning. Students need to designate a time and area in the home to complete their daily homework. As well, students need to have an abundance of supplies, so limited time is wasted with students looking for pencils and glue sticks. Second strategy is to get the child involved in creating the homework routine that is reasonable.

After parents have created a good homework routine, teachers can help by giving interesting homework. Engage students with homework that require them to find the answers by researching, creating, and analyzing. For example, let students create a volcano at home and write about their discoveries for an in-class science discussion. Another option is for students to calculate how much time they spend watching television in day, with answers in seconds, minutes, and hours to practice multiplication and addition skills.

Homework is an asset but it must keep the student engaged.
