Summer is nearing an end and the first day of school is in our sight. For many children, they will be returning to school on September 5, 2006 to spend the next ten months with 20+ classmates. As a teacher it is important to create a safe and nurturing learning environment for all students. The first day of school is critical to foster a community in your class.
Incorporate a variety of lessons that encourage students to be active participants in the process of learning. The first day of school should be geared at getting to know your students and for the students to become acquainted with you. First Day Welcome Strategy, Birthday Activity, and Name Poems are excellent activities to incorporate into your first day to bring the students together as a class.
