Learning the Alphabet

Students learning the alphabet should use as many of the eight multiple intelligences outlined by Howard Gardner.

Teaching the alphabet should be a fun time for the little ones. However, I often see students learning the alphabet only using one or two of the multiple intelligences, mostly linguistic and visual. Sadly, if a teacher only use one or two of the multiple intelligences they will not be teaching to all of the students.

Many of the alphabet activities are geared to the students sitting at their desks and not being active in the learning process. Our schools are geared to teaching to the logical and linguistic intelligences but our future is to teach students using the other six multiple intelligences.

Incorporate a variety of the alphabet activities in your class and be amazed at how quickly students learn the alphabet. Rather than memorizing they will master the alphabet.
