Beginners Coaching Classes for School Coaches

Aug 22, 2006 Debbie DeSpirt

Teachers have many roles in the school and coaching a sport afterschool is just one of them. Is a coaching class worth the investment for teachers?

After school activities are a part of the teacher's role in many school districts. Some of these obligations are expected even though according to the union they do not have to participate in them. However, reality is teachers do volunteer there time to coach school sports such as basketball and soccer. Many times teachers grab a book and begin to fudge their way as the coach. Unsure of practices and how to motivate the team they haphazardly bring the students and the sport together as best as they can.

So, the next time the community recreation guide is delivered to your home, sift through the pages for an introductory coaching program. A coaching program is usually composed of the theory and practical components. Trained coaches develop the players' skills and reinforce positive behavior based on the players' strengths and not weaknesses. Instead of screaming at a player or benching them for not running fast enough, as a trained coach you will have the tools to identify their weakness and implement a plan to turn it from a weakness into strength. Often untrained and some trained coaches expect too much from the players and they are unable to provide them support to enhance their ability, resulting in the player becoming frustrated and not trying their best.

The purpose of students participating in sports is to develop their athletic ability, sportsmanship, cooperation, and to just have fun. Most of our students will not be the next Tiger Woods or Tony Hawk and we are thankful for this because we still need doctors, teachers, directors and other professionals to create a balanced world.

Teachers think creatively when deciding on a course. An introduction coaching program is an asset to your teaching skills and a resume builder. Schools need great teachers and coaches to advance our students' athletic and academic abilities.

Hi Debbie,

Coaching - what a slippery slope that can be!

A coaching course is a great way to gain insight and experience and everyone who works with children in this way will benefit. This is also great advice for parents, too, since many teams are co-coached by teachers and parent volunteers!

Terrific!!
