Exciting new twists to the traditional game of tag played in gym class. Invite your students to create their own game of tag.

Freeze Tag: Objective is for the student to tag a student in class.

  • The teacher decides who will be the 'it' person for the game of tag.
  • Once a student is tagged they must freeze in position.
  • The student can be unfrozen by any other student.
  • The 'it' person tries to tag as many players as possible.
  • Teacher may choose to have more than one student 'it', as well, their may be a time limit for how long they are 'it' for.
  • Another twist is to assign only a few students who are able to unfreeze the frozen students.

Simon Says Tag: Objective is to tag a student in class.

  • Teacher will assign who is ‘it’ at the start of the game.
  • The student who is ‘it’ decides if they will run, jump, walk, hop, or any other type movement to tag the other students.
  • The other students must mirror the movement of the person who is ‘it’. They must continually watching the person who is ‘it’ because they can change their movement at anytime.
  • If the ‘it’ student begins the game walking, all students must be walking. If the ‘it’ student decides to jump, all other students must jump and this continues throughout the game.
  • Once the ‘it’ student tags another student, the new ‘it’ person decides on the type of movement.

Elimination Tag: Objective is to tag all the students on one team to win the game.

  • All students are assigned to Team A and Team B. The teacher is best to make the teams based on running ability. The teams should have a uniform that distinguishes them from each other.
  • The students must run within a designated area in the gymnasium or on the field. Teacher decides if team A or team B will be ‘it’.
  • The team that is ‘it’ has 2 minutes to tag the other students on the other team. If they are tagged they are out of the game, and stands around the boundary watching the game.
  • After 2 minutes the other team is ‘it’ and they have the same purpose of tagging the other team.
  • This continues until one player is left standing. The winning team is the one with the remaining player.

The above three tag games are a great twist to the original tag game. These tag games gets everyone involved in the game and moving. As well, for tag there is little coordination required, to allow all students to participate.
