Teacher Review

Art the forgotten subject has great value in the classroom and Joyce Raimondo has written an exceptional book on how to open conversations on art for all students. Raimondo’s book Make It Pop!, would be a great addition to any teacher’s library. Her book introduces students to the art of Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and other great American pop artists. As well, she has detailed instructions on how students can recreate the great work of American pop artists with their own creative flair.

The exciting thing about pop art is the work is created from contemporary life. Raimondo’s projects are simple to implement even with limited school budgets. She provides open ended questions about life that initiates discussions with the students. Her questions invite students to see our world in a variety of ways. The purpose of the book is for students to go on a journey of discovery with art as its guide.

Make it Pop! explores the popularity of past people, places, and things and opens discussions for the teacher and students to ponder what’s popular today. It is a great avenue to explore sex, drugs, family, media, and much more and their impact on the students. A teacher may wish to have students to create pop art on their knowledge of drugs. Will the students display drugs as a positive or negative? In pop art the student is given the flexibility to incorporate their beliefs on the popular thing. If majority of the students’ images display drugs as a positive, it is best to keep the discussion going.

Joyce Raimondo wrote an interesting book that allows teachers to veer from the more traditional art to art that can be incorporated into a variety of subjects. Her book is geared for junior, middle, and high school students. Enjoy implementing her lessons into your classroom effortlessly.
