Gym activities to get students hearts beating and to learn about the number 100. The 100th day of school is a fun way for students to understand the concept of 100.
Do not forget about implementing 100th Day activities during gym class. Gym class is an excellent time to teach students about units of 10 and the number 100. 1. Have students sit around the circle in the gymnasium and sit for 100 seconds. Students do not talk or move. Students stand for 100 seconds in a frozen position. Begin with students standing with their hands beside their sides. Students can have any expression on their face. Students stand for 100 seconds in a frozen position but they must smile for the entire unit of time. Students stand for 100 seconds with their arms straight out from their sides. Their body will look like a lowercase ‘t’. This is good for aligning their digestive tract. It is great to do this exercise daily for a minimum of 60 seconds. Many students will not be able to stay in this position for 100 seconds. 2. Have students do 10 sets of activities following a leader. Students do 10 sit-ups, 10 push-ups, 10 jumping jacks, 10 lunges, 10 arm circles for the left arm, 10 arm circles for the right arm, 10 knee jumps, 10 punches with the left hand, 10 punches with the right arm, 10 twists. Students do 10 sets of activities with a partner. 10 chest passes with a basketball, 10 bounce passes with a basketball, 10 behind the back passes, 10 overhead passes, 10 lay ups, 10 shots from the key, 10 running passes, 10 jumping passes, 10 dribbles and pass, 10 random passes. It is best to set up stations because there will not be enough basketball nets for all groups to participate at the same time. You can do this exercise with any sport such as volleyball or floor hockey. 3. Have students try and throw a tennis ball 100 meters. Measure each throw and in math class you can calculate the average throw and graph the different distances. A twist is for students to throw a variety of balls 100 meters such as a volleyball, golf ball, or rubber ball. Predict before throwing which ball will go the furthest. As well, you may wish to throw a ball only 100 centimeters or 100 decimeters and see which students overthrow, or under throw. Even though the distance is small, it is still difficult to throw for accuracy. 4. Have students’ jump rope 100 times. The winner is the student who is successful without stopping. Give a time frame for activities similar to this. Students can see who can keep the ball in the air for 100 seconds, or for 100 passes. Tip: Give small rewards for the winners of the different activities. Students who are able to earn a ribbon or treat are more willing to put in the extra effort. 100th Day of School Activities
