A spin to the traditional game of tag that involves all of the students not a selected few. Gym class is to have all students participate not just the athletic ones.
Gym class is designed to teach students creative and fun ways to be active. Put your own spin to the traditional game of tag to involve all students. Doubles Tag is one of many ideas to create a different tag game.
- Each student needs a partner with similar running abilities. Pair fast runners together and the slower runners together. If there is an odd number have 3 students for one group.
- The students must decide who will be the ‘it’ person for the game of tag. You may have students decide independently or have them choose based on their birth date or another variable. Once all students have identified who is ‘it’ have them point to them. This allows you to see who are the chaser and the one being chased.
- The students are to chase their partner and try and tag them before the whistle blows. If the ‘it’ person tags their partner, they change roles.
- As students are playing tag, the teacher blows the whistle. At the sound of the whistle all players must freeze immediately. The players freeze in their position.
- When all players are frozen, the ‘it’ person tries to touch their partner with only moving their arm. Their legs are frozen to the ground. If they are able to touch their partner, their roles are reversed.
- The teacher blows the whistle and the game resumes.
Doubles tag is a great game as it gets everyone involved. In traditional tag often only a few students are playing while the rest are roaming around the gym not getting their heartbeats elevated. Doubles tag is a great deal of fun and the students get a nice workout.
