Introduce students to the history of the Christmas Tree. Have an open forum on the history behind the Christmas tree and why it became a symbol of Christmas in many European homes. Write down all of the different answers on chart paper for the students to view.
Read a short passage on the history of the Christmas tree or read a book about its origin. Go back to the list on the chart paper and circle all of the answers that are correct from the story.
Assemble students into small groups to research the life of a Christmas tree. Students will write a report on the lifeline of a Christmas tree from infancy till it is harvested for the Christmas season.
Students will research via internet, books, and phone or public interviews with local tree farmers in the community. Tree farmers would be more than happy to speak of the importance of their farms and livelihood.
After students have completed their reports they can present part of their report that they find most fascinating or important for fellow students need to know about the Christmas trees. Some groups may demonstrates ways to recycle the Christmas trees while others may show via photos or pictures the life of the Christmas tree. Before the students present, be sure there is little overlap in presentation to ensure students will remain focused during presentations.
As well, students may present their reports in the library for other students, teachers, administrative staff, and parents to learn all about the Christmas tree.
