Celebrate the 100th day of school with your class. It is a great opportunity to discuss the number 100 and how it is used in our lives and how it is represented.

Math Activities

1. Activities to celebrate the hundredth day of school with the class while teaching them about the number 100 and the many ways it can be used or represented.

2. Students bring in a 100 items to paste to a piece of construction paper. Students will paste items random, or in sets of ten to demonstrate easier counting, or to illustrate the number 100 or the word one hundred. The way students illustrate 100 is dependent on their age and ability.

3. Teacher fills a variety of different sizes of jars, boxes, and cans with 100 items that vary in size. The teacher will ask the class to estimate the amount of objects in each container and record the information on the board. Teacher will distribute the samples and have students in groups count the items. Teacher will ask students how they counted the items.

4. A teacher has students cut out 100 pieces of paper and they create a picture with the pieces of paper. Students may wish to draw a picture and fill in the picture with the pieces of paper.

5. Count to 100 in as many ways as possible. The only rule is you must always count to exactly 100. This is good way to illustrate patterns.

6. Students complete a hundred chart and locate different patterns.

7. Create a dot-to-dot picture counting by 1, 2, or 5. The student draws a simple picture and traces over it with a black marker. Then, the student places another sheet of paper over the original drawing and prints the numbers for the dot-to-dot picture.

8. Write the words from one to one hundred.

9. Students estimate 100 seconds. Students close eyes and the teacher gives them a starting point and the students raise their hands when they believe 100 seconds is over. Teacher will write the different times on the board to illustrate what 100 seconds felt like for the students.

10. Students roll the dice 100 times and graph the answers. How many times did the number 5 or 6 come up in 100 rolls? The teacher will have each group present their data and then begin a discussion about the different graphs between the groups. How many groups had similar or different answers?

11. Students mark off 100 steps. The teacher will group students and they will choose one group member to walk one hundred steps. All groups start at the same starting position. The teacher and students will have a discussion on the size of a step and how 100 steps are different depending on the size of the students shoe and their step.
